CJ Brafford comes from the Lakota Oglala Sioux Indian tribe and is making huge steps in the Colorado history field.  She was one of the participants in the Native Nations Procession, which led up to the opening ceremony of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC, 2004.   

In 2018, Brafford received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Public ServiceIn 2022, she has been honored with the Colorado Women’s Day “Spirit” Award for her work and dedication in preserving Colorado’s Native American traditions and culture.
